The Brief
Avala Grill, a new family-owned Serbian restaurant, required a comprehensive brand identity. The core objective was to create a visual system that authentically honored generations of Serbian culinary heritage while simultaneously enabling the restaurant to stand out vibrantly in a competitive local food scene. The goal was to attract customers from day one and establish a credible, enduring presence for this new venture. This project included a custom logo, menu design, t-shirts, and building signage, strategically designed for efficient market entry and immediate customer recognition.

The primary challenge for Avala Grill was to bridge two distinct market needs: preserving the rich authenticity of Serbian culture while appealing to a modern, diverse customer base including both Serbian-Americans and local food enthusiasts. The brand identity needed to not only capture attention on a busy street but also foster long-term growth and resonate deeply with its target demographics for years to come.

The Logo
Drawing inspiration from Serbia's iconic Mount Avala and its tower, the logo design ingeniously incorporates the letter 'A' within its architecture, forming the foundation of the wordmark. This not only provided a unique, memorable visual anchor but also served as a direct, recognizable connection to Avala's geographic and culinary roots and enhancing brand authenticity.

The Process
I started by discussing Nemanja's family history and food traditions while reviewing photos of Mount Avala and Avala Tower together. My first concepts used the entire tower structure directly before I realized it wouldn't scale well for smaller applications. However, by separating the base from the rest of the tower, it revealed the natural "A" shape that was incorporated into the other letters in "AVALA."
The Process
Our approach began with an in-depth exploration of Avala's family history and culinary traditions, combined with visual research into its Serbian roots. This collaborative discovery phase ensures the brand narrative is deeply authentic. Through iterative concept development, including a key pivot from initial design explorations, we refined the logo to ensure optimal scalability and versatility across all applications, securing a future-proof brand identity.
The Color and Type
The bold contrast of a deep black background with a warm buttercream yellow was selected to achieve striking visibility and modern sophistication, ensuring the brand commands attention while maintaining production practicality across all mediums. Paired with the elegant Yeseva One font, these combinations provide a distinct, memorable aesthetic designed for seamless brand consistency and immediate visual recognition.
